Title Sequences

Whilst drawing ideas based on genre for all the movies I look at. I also went back to look at their title sequences

Divergent

I was inspired to use narration as the plot line to Divergent can be confusing if not explained properly as well as that the audience are being put into a new world which can cause confusion. I was inspired by how clear Shailene Woodley had been in her narration as well as how the producers scripted the monologue seeing as I had read the book before watching it and was aware of the plot line.

The titling sequence in divergent is used to set the scene and due to it being a dystopian genre the film has to introduce this version of the world to the audience. This is done by the use of narration by Tris, the protagonist and the main character in Divergent. The opening scene is almost a monologue to introduce the setting using a range different shots to introduce the factions.

Before the narration starts the audience is introduced to the setting, at first we see peaceful harmonious scenery and then the camera slowly pans towards the wall separating the city from the rest of the world. The audience is then submerged into a setting of skyscrapers and a present day world that we as the audience recognise. However now that Chicago is destroyed audiences are stripped of their familiarity with the setting which evokes interest in the movie.

The Avengers- Age of Ultron

Marvel films are based on comics and so many of their titling  sequences are images of the comic foreshadowing what will happen in the movie. AOU was unique in not having clips of the comic within the titling and instead having small figurines and trying to for shadow a larger overall image of the action in the movie. Although its influence is limited on my final task as The Age of Ultron is a sequel and a majority of the characters are introduced  in the first movie and so it is easier for the producers to create a titing sequence .

The titling sequence is successful in building anticipation as it has a slow start to the movie and the audience are waiting for the action this sequel will provide. There is also a need for the sequel to be as good as the first movie so that the movie's rating does not decrease and the audience doesn't loose interest for the upcoming movies. By having a slow start and hinting at action the titling sequence is able to successfully build anticipation for the rest of the movie. This inspired me as I am limited to 2 minutes for my final project and in order to suggest what will happen later on in the movie, I need  a subtle way to introduce each genre whilst not giving away too much or seeming like a trailer, which The Age of Ultron has successfully managed no to do.

With Deadpool they use a similar idea of freezing a moment from a scene in the movie and then creating the titling around the characters in that scene. It is inspirational as it manages to meet the genre (Comedy) and appease the audience by effectively delivering with an R- rated tone and also breaking the fourth wall emphasising the comedic tone .

Toy story

The opening credits of this film establish the movie really well. We can see that the plot is about the relationship between a toy and a child. The montage of scenes between Woody and the child establishes that love which carries on across the sequels which what makes it such an effective opening scene

Unknown Track - Unknown Artist
00:00 / 00:00

The soundtrack used to suggest the bond between a kid and his toys and is used to set up the classic children's cartoon "you've got a friend in me" the specially selected soundtrack with the montage is inspiring as it clearly sets the movie up.

These inspirations led to the creation of our titling sequence that is reflective of our dystopian opening credits.
